After years of planning and eighteen months of construction, Mayfield Park is set to open on Thu 22 Sep, becoming Manchester City Centre’s first public park in over a century.
Featuring an official ribbon-cutting from Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig, Thursday’s opening ceremony will officially inaugurate what she describes as ‘a 6.5 acre oasis in the heart of the city’, having transformed the barren industrial landscape beside Escape to Freight Island.
Described as a ‘significant piece of new, family-friendly, inclusive greenspace’ by Martyn Evans, Creative Director of park developers U+I, Mayfield will feature a sprawling children’s play area, public footpaths and festival-grade turf for live events.
Ahead of the ceremony, Councillor Craig said: “There are some projects that feel so momentous in the development story of our city that we look forward to them with great anticipation. Mayfield Park is one of those developments – a project that has true transformational potential for this part of our city.”
