The Silk Museum explores Macclesfield’s connection to Ancient Egypt throughout October

This October, Macclesfield’s Silk Museum presents invaluable artefacts from Ancient Egypt donated by explorers Marianne Brocklehurst and Mary Booth – the MBs – to coincide with the centenary of Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Visitors can explore Macclesfield’s connections to Ancient Egypt through a series of children’s workshops running from Sat 22 Oct to Sat 29 Oct, which invites guests to decipher hieroglyphics, paint with watercolours and even design their own Ancient Egyptian board games. Offering everything from creating clay cartouches to uncovering the secrets of a mummy case, the Silk Museum’s extensive programme of interactive sessions makes for the perfect educational family day out.

The daughter of local silk manufacturer John Brocklehurst, Macclesfield’s first MP, Marianne travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East with her companion, Mary, and kept a diary full of ‘lively watercolours’ capturing life on the River Nile, which features alongside a range of unprecedented donations made by the MBs to the Silk Museum.

On Thu 27 Oct, the Silk Museum displays Brocklehurst’s diary in full, revealing her incredible intrepid exploits for the first time.
