Taking place at 11am on Sat 24 Jun, A Northern Song celebrates the singular, joyous genius of Victoria Wood with a series of sublime orchestral arrangements of her most memorable songs as part of Manchester Classical festival at The Bridgewater Hall.
A world premiere arrangement, A Northern Song unites the Hallé Children’s Choir with the full, breath-taking force of the Hallé, and showcases a selection of Victoria Wood’s most beloved musical numbers – rendered as stunning new orchestrations by composer Howard Goodall CBE and Victoria’s long-time Musical Director and friend, Nigel Lilley.
The concert will also include Olivier-winning actor and star of The Queen, Bridget Jones and The Crown, Alex Jennings and star of Comedy Store Players improvisational troupe and the television series Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Josie Lawrence.
Conducted by Stephen Bell, the programme commences with ‘Be Our Guest’ from Beauty and the Beast, before A Northern Song honours Victoria’s unique legacy, her breadth of ingenious comedic characters and her prominent seat in the pantheon of British culture.
On Sat 24 and Sun 25 Jun, Manchester Classical gathers the city’s decorated musical organisations for a triumphant festival of orchestral performances, food, crafts and free entertainment in a groundbreaking collaboration between The Bridgewater Hall, the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and Manchester Collective. Throughout the weekend, orchestral enthusiasts and the classical-curious alike can enjoy a selection of mesmerising concerts ranging from fascinating minimalist compositions to soaring symphonic masterworks.
