Manchester City Council announces event series to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month

Manchester City Council has announced a special string of events across the city to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month.

Dedicated to celebrating South Asian Cultures, histories and communities, 2023’s theme is ‘stories to tell’, and focuses on spotlighting the stories that make up the UK’s diverse and vibrant South Asian communities.

On Fri 28 Jul, hosted at the Khizra Mosque between 6pm-8pm young people from youth groups around the area will present poetry, art and fashion inspired by what being South Asian means to them. This event has been organised in partnership with HOME and local artists, who have helped enable participants to creatively share their stories.

On Mon 31 Jul residents can enjoy an immersive evening of music and dance as the Jain Centre in Levenshulme hosts a night of Punjabi folk music with artist Heer Ranjha between 6.30pm-10pm.

Longsight Arts Space invites young budding artists to an afternoon of arts and crafts on Mon 7 Aug from 11.30am-1.30pm while over at Rushford Park on Fri 11 Aug young people from across the community who have been working with local artists to explore their culture will showcase their work and share their stories.

Councillor Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “South Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate our city’s diverse history and, remember the outstanding contribution that the South Asian communities have made to our city.

“Manchester has a long history of supporting our South Asian communities and I’m proud that the council are supporting and hosting events to mark the month in collaboration with the South Asian Community.  I’d encourage residents to attend the free events to learn more about South Asian culture and to show support for this month of celebration.”
