It is people like Devendra Banhart that make you wonder what on earth you’ve been doing with your life. It feels as though he’s been around forever – his first album proper was released in 2002, and he’s just got around to putting out his eighth, moving and developing his sound with each long-player. He’s still only 32, yet this night at The Ritz has the vibe of a veteran playing a long-awaited show for his adoring public. His music has changed and developed over time, from freak-folk and psych into something straighter. It’s obviously working for him – Q said his latest effort, Mala, was his best yet and we tend to agree. A true one of a kind, it is always a great night whenever Dev comes to town.
Wed 17 Jul, The Ritz, Whitworth St W, Manchester M1 5NQ, 7pm, £17.50, http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/
