Running at The Lowry from Wed 14-Sat 17 Feb, contemporary circus company Ockham’s Razor presents Tess, a triumphantly liberating and ‘physically thrilling’ (The Sunday Times) adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s seminal work, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, celebrating a heroine of Victorian literature with a memorable night of breathtaking spectacle and fearless feminism.
Just opened in London 4 stars in The Guardian, this ‘dreamlike’ production brings a fresh and wondrously inventive take on Hardy’s iconic social novel with a mesmerising blend of circus-infused dance, show-stopping acrobatics and original prose from the book, backed by a wall of shifting projections and immersive set design.
Stopping at The Lowry as part of an extensive nationwide tour, the Ockham’s Razor production sees the immensely talented ensemble cast glide between billowing sheets of fabric, scaling moving structures and wielding wooden planks as Hardy’s destitute County of Wessex is brought vividly to life onstage.
Bold, original and timelessly prescient, Tess’ fresh feminist lens and innovative storytelling brings new depth to the dauntless heroine and captures a poetic, joyous yet ultimately heartbreaking study of privilege, poverty, power imbalances, sexual desire and female relationships.
