Now in its fifth year, Grimmfest – superbly sub-titled Grimm Up North – is an annual festival of the kind of movie that gets you labelled strange if you mention you watch them at work. Specialising in the kind of film that plays on your nerves before going in hard with brutal twists, turns and incisions, the first two movies from 2013’s line-up have just been confirmed: Hansel and Gretel Get Baked will have a Northern premiere, turning the classic fairytale into the story of sibling stoners lured to their death with the ultimate high in suburban America; Jugface is aired for the first time in the UK, and lists backwoods religion gone bad, blood sacrifice, incest, and frightening folk art as its themes. Earlybird tickets have just gone on sale for the entire run of around 15 showings, Q&As and shorts – but believe us when we say this isn’t for everyone.

Thu 3 Oct – Sun 6 Oct, The Dancehouse, 10A Oxford Rd, Manchester M1 5QA, Earlybird tickets £48.50, http://grimmfest.com/
