Jewish Hollywood celebrates a century of Jewish cinema at Hope Mill Theatre

A spectacular production celebrating an entire century of Jewish Cinema makes its Manchester debut at Hope Mill Theatre this September.

Jewish Hollywood explores the significant influence that Jews had in shaping the depiction of the ‘American Dream’ and the challenges they faced spurred by historical prejudices.

Described as a ‘revue crammed full of songs that explore the reality as well as the glitz’, Jewish Hollywood is a tale of ambition and sacrifice that asks several vital questions.

What was the price paid for assimilation? How did the Jews of Hollywood confront anti-semitism? How did the Holocaust change their depiction of Jews on-screen? How badly hit were they by the notorious blacklisting of hte 1950s? And what caused the rebirth of Jewish cinema in the 1960s – giving rise to stars like Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen and Bette Midler?

The show’s soundtrack features famous tunes like Hava Nagila, Don’t Raing on my Parade, My Yiddishe Momme, Tradition, Second Hand Rose, The Way We Were, Putting on the Ritz and Theme From ‘Exodus’.
