This month, the Bristol Old Vic production of Wonder Boy brings a joyously uplifting and dazzlingly inventive play about the power of communication and finding your voice to Lowry, directed by Olivier Award-winnner Sally Cookson.

Hailed as ‘boundingly imaginative’ by The Times and ‘giddily enjoyable’ in The Guardian’s glittering five-star review, Wonder Boy tells the inspirational story of Sonny, a twelve-year-old with a stammer who is facing his imminent adolescence in a world of lethal language and confounding conversation.

While he seeks solace in his imaginary – and only – friend, comic book hero Captain Chatter, Sonny must eventually find his voice and make himself heard in reality. When his headteacher casts him in the school production of Hamlet, he discovers the real superhero within.

Winner of the 2023 Writers’ Guild Award for Best Play, Wonder Boy promises a memorable and uplifting night at the theatre for ages twelve and above, with spellbinding visuals, wondrously creative original music and a dose of delightful humour.

Wonder Boy includes live creative captioning on stage throughout the show.
