An original Manchester rave institution and still going strong, part of a Guy Called Gerald’s appeal is his ability to present genre-spanning sets of electronic and dance music while retaining consistency and a euphoric and uplifting vibe. Acting as a connection point between the US import of Chicago house and Detroit techno of the 1980s and the emerging UK rave scene, A Guy Called Gerald’s influence on modern dance culture is impossible to underestimate. Breakthrough track Voodoo Ray was a cornerstone of the Acid House scene that exploded in Manchester, and this Friday he is set to perform a fully live home town set at South, and no doubt challenging their acclaimed Funktion-One setup. His house classic, Voodoo Ray (1988) still sounds delicious today.
