Limited Celestial Space by Igor + Moreno takes place as part of The Lowry’s boundary-shifting EDIT series. In keeping with the series’ aim of giving artists and performers a space in which to take risks and develop previously unexplored ideas into new works, this exhibition is the first art-gallery installation that London-based contemporary dance company Igor + Moreno has created. Limited Celestial Space translates the artist and performers’ preoccupation with movement, meaning and sensory perception into the gallery: conceived as an ‘architectural environment’, the installation is intended as a space for both provocation and contemplation. Light, sound, smoke and smells specially-created by perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri are activated as the public walks through the gallery, encouraging both disorientation and re-connection with the senses. Taking place alongside the premiere of Igor + Moreno’s solo show BEAT and the company’s earlier dance piece Andante at The Lowry, the installation reflects particularly on the idea of a temple as contemplative, but not always comfortable.
