Flowers: they’re not for everybody. The sworn enemy of hayfever sufferers the world over, still thousands flock to shows in their honour each year – and though it may not rival Chelsea in terms of renown, the yearly Royal Horticultural Society show at Tatton Park will be packed with gardening nerds from all across the region. This is the event’s 14 year – continually growing since it’s inaugural edition in 1999, there will be over 500 exhibitors at the 2013 version, with numbers still growing. There will be tips on how to start and tend your own allotment, a ‘Ladies Day’ (including a show by MMU fashion graduates) and four distinct ‘zones’ of garden designs to wonder around – the Escape Zone’s Alzheimer’s Society garden sounds like it should be moving and incredibly special. With this and much-lauded Dig the City festival on the horizon, it looks like having greenfingers might not be quite the rarity we once thought.

Thu 25 Jul – Sun 28 Jul, Tatton Park, Mereheath Lane, Knutsford, Cheshire, 10am onwards, £23.50 upwards (discounts for members), http://www.rhs.org.uk/
