When it was announced that The Castle Hotel was to be taking over Gullivers, it was thought of as a fool’s endeavor. For one, it’s right across the road from their bar and thusly in direct competition. Also, it was seen as a lesser version of the Oldham Street fave. A dirty little brother that lived across the street. Thankfully, The Castle have not made a foolish mistake – they have simply seen the potential in a lovely site and shown it the love and attention they have to all their acquisitions across the city, mixing comfort with the old fashioned style. They’ve also translated their love of live music to Gullivers, and though the upstairs was always used as a gig venue, it did always seem like you were running the risk of catching TB while up there. Now after a mammoth refurb the upstairs room looks glorious – and one of the first bands to take to this stage will be Sheffield’s agrobeat pioneers Blood Sport. Supported by Manchester bands Mistoa Poltsa, Severed Shadow, Champion Lover – pus a rare appearance by legendary music duo Jessop & Williamson – they will test the new venue as best they can.
