Led by Olivier Award-winning conductor Mark Wigglesworth, the BBC Philharmonic rounds off its soaring 2023-24 season with a spectacular full-force concert featuring a selection of triumphant works by Wagner, Messiaen and Berlioz at The Bridgewater Hall, marking the final opportunity to catch the world-renowned orchestra until September.
Fittingly titled Ending on a High, the unmissable finale erupts into life with Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder, a shimmering collection of five arrangements for female voice which showcases the musical titan’s vast, transcendent sound on a rare, intimate scale. Messiaen sends a white-hot celestial jolt to shatter the rousing pomp with Un sourire – ‘a smile’ – a light and inspiring string arrangement originally written for the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s death, before the crashing storm of Berlioz’s Fantastic Symphony transports audiences through the dreams, passions and tortured visions of romantic oblivion.
