Nigerian political poet and musician Femi Kuti brings his Positive Force band to Manchester this month. Having long since stepped out of the shadow of his famous activist father, Fela, Femi Kuti’s live show is one that will engage with your mind and conscience while packing an unremittingly catchy punch on the dance floor. Formed the the 1980s, the Positive Force have worked with international stars from Mos Def to Jane’s Addiction, sending the upbeat messages of Afrobeat across the world in the 21st century. Femi counts the sax, trumpet and keyboards among his instrumental arsenal, and the musical passion of their family has been continued in recent years with the addition of his son on alto saxophone. This performance at Band on the Wall interjects a summer of festivals for the band, including jives at Latitude and Larmer Tree.

Thu 16 Jul, Band on the Wall, 25 Swan Street, M4 5JZ. Tel: 0161 834 1786, 7.30pm, £20 – £22.50,
