Having reopened its doors for a soft launch back in April 2021, Chorlton co-op Unicorn Grocery has unveiled the completion date for their extensive refurbishment and expansion project.

In a refit that has seen the venue welcome a new and larger interior, a more comfortable customer journey and a larger outdoor area for storing bikes (complete with a brand new bike pump), the Unicorn team has confirmed that the main stage of their refurbishment project should be done and dusted by Monday 16 August 2021. This initial stage of completion will include removing restrictions inhibiting customer flow around the venue’s expanded shopping space, with the official refurbishment ending by August 31 after minor painting and decorating work has also been completed.

Originally unveiled earlier this year, Unicorn’s improvement plans also included an expansion to their porch entrance alongside adding an extra 500 square foot of retail space for storing fruit and vegetables, whilst alleviating congestion and creating a better shopping experience for customers.

The refurb also allows for more natural light to enter the grocery through glazed roof sections and circular light tubes and, in keeping with Unicorn’s eco-friendly ethos, its new flat roof will be used to collect ‘grey water’ which will be used for flushing staff toilets.

The popular co-op’s plans were inspired by the results of a survey which asked customers what they’d like to see change in the space to improve their visits – with social distancing factors also considered. Visit their social channels and website for up to date information.
