There’s plenty going on this week and in the coming months for Manchester food and drink. Happening right now there’s the Refuge Gin Bar and weekenders, as well as Festa Italiana bringing a special banquet to the city this weekend. In the coming months there’s the first ever Afro BBQ Festival in Salford, as well as the Gay Villages Bake Off, coffee and bakery spot Grapefruit Cafe opening up in Sale and an extra site planned for Pot Kettle Black. Refuge Gin Bar
The Refuge’s terrace now features a gin bar for the rest of the summer leading up to the annual Come As You Are Weekender. Martin Miller’s Gin will be hosting the bar which will be serving drinks at the Refuge Weekend Terrace Parties taking place every weekend until 17th August. Cucumber sherbert and ginger ale feature in the English Garden gin cocktail amongst others, and you can sip on the high-end cocktails whilst listening to The Unabomber’s eclectic vinyl choices every weekend.

Pot Kettle Black to open NOMA
Barton Arcade coffee shop Pot Kettle Black is set to open a third site following their previous expansion into Spinningfields. This autumn will see the cafe move into the hotly anticipated Moda Angel Gardens, a high-end block of flats in the newly dubbed NOMA part of town. Owned by two rugby league players, PKB will be joining other exclusive offers for residents including a cinema room and rooftop gardens as the development aims to be the most sought after address in the city.

Afro BBQ Festival
This August will see the launch of the first Afro BBQ festival at Albert’s of Salford sporting pitches. The free to attend event will be a celebration of African street food, alongside face painting, DJs, and fashion shows. Featuring food from all over the continent, including street food from Nairobi, Zimbabwe, and Ghana amongst many more. Access to the stands will be via one of the paid for packages that start at £20, and rise to £40 for the VIP package offering a glass of fizz and fast track access.

The Great Village Bake Off 2019
If you fancy yourself as the next Ruby Tandoh or Liam Charles then you’ll want to get yourself signed up to The Great Village Bake Off coming to the Gay Village next month. Entering its seventh edition, the contest inspired by the BBC show is looking for entrants from all ranges of skill level from experts to novices. Competitors can enter into one of three categories and of course one of these is a showstopper. The competition will be judged by previous Bake Off contestant Howard Middleton. Whilst the event is free to attend or compete in, pre-registration is essential.

Salvi’s & Tre Ciccio Banquet
Two of Manchester’s best loved independent Italian restaurants are joining forces this weekend for a ‘Suburbia meets City Centre’ Banquet. As part of the returning Festa Italiana, the Italian food and drink festival in Cathedral Gardens, Salvi’s and Tre Ciccio will be combining to showcase the best of Italian food. Hosted by food critic and tour guide Jonathan Schofield, the meal on Saturday 27th July will see the head chefs from the two restaurants telling anecdotes about their cooking life whilst whipping up some prime examples of Neapolitan cuisine.

Alty Wine Fair 2019
Reserve Wines are becoming quite well known for their wine fairs, having just hosted their inaugural Mackie Mayor Wine Fair – and they’re back with the Alty Wine Fair in August in New Market Square. The outdoor section of the market, just down the road from the Market House that’s home to the Altrincham Reserve Wines branch, will host 60+ wines with food available from Plucky Pickle and Reuben’s. The Thursday evening event runs from 6.30pm-9.30pm so there’s plenty of time to sober up in time for work the next day.

Grapefruit Cafe Opens in Sale
The talented folks behind zine, vinyl and live music operation Comfortable on a Tightrope have opened up their very own coffee house in Sale, overlooking the Bridgewater Canale. Located next to Sale Metrolink spot, this brainchild of founders Laetitia Glenton and R L Perry has gathered together a talented group of creatives to give this new spot a hand-made and homely feel. A full lunch menu is yet to be announced but there’s nothing stopping you dropping by to sample some of their coffee and tasty baked goods. Find out more here.
