Material Remains Preview at Holden Gallery
MMU’s Holden Gallery launches its latest exhibition on Monday, but you can catch an early free preview this Friday night. The exhibition is called Material Remains, and it reflects on the process of making and building – as the Holden Gallery itself prepares to be wrapped in hoardings for future building work – as interpreted through the pens, brushes and chisels of six artists. The artists cover a range of different mediums, but all the pieces are intentionally unfinished, to give an insight into the way the pieces are created whilst raising questions about the nature of works-in-progress. After this preview, the exhibition runs from Monday 23 October to Friday 15 December.
Fri 20 Oct, The Holden Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan University, Grosvenor Building, Cavendish Street, Manchester, M15 6BR. 5.30pm – 7.30pm, www.facebook.com

Return of Memory Preview at HOME (pictured)
Another exhibition preview this Friday night: Arts hub HOME celebrates the launch of its latest exhibition Return of Memory. It’s a multi-disciplinary exhibition looking at the suppression and rewriting of memory, both in the context of the Soviet era and the Eastern Europe of modern day. As part of this preview, there will be a one-off 6.30pm performance by artist Aza Shadenova entitled ‘Fit for one who sits and cries, for all communist parties’, which is inspired by the writings of surrealist poet and dissident Soviet children’s author Daniil Kharms.
Fri 20 Oct, HOME, 2 Tony Wilson Place, Manchester, M15 4FN. Tel: 0161 200 1500, 6pm – 10pm, homemcr.org
