The dark nights are drawing in and the weather’s growing frostier by the day. This is pretty bad. However, there are plenty of free things to do this weekend, and this is damn good. Swings and roundabouts, baby!

Christmas lights switch on (pictured)
Everyone’s got their festive traditions, many of which involve grabbing a mug of mulled wine and a bratwurst sausage at the Christmas markets. To do that, you’ll just have to wait a bit longer, but in the meantime head to Albert Square to see Manchester become illuminated in all of its garish Christmas glory. This year at the lights switch on, celebs come in the form of James Arthur, The Vamps, Faye Tozer (of Steps fame), Britain’s Got Talent’s Ashleigh and Pudsey and many, many more. The night concludes with a firework display, meaning that you’ll get welcome Christmas in with a big old bang.

Student Weekender along the Oxford Road corridor
Manchester’s student corridor is an area bustling with art, culture, bars, cafes, shops and nightlife – essentially, it’s no wonder that it takes many newbies to the city quite a while to venture away from Oxford Road. The Student Weekender has been designed to celebrate exactly what the diverse area has to offer, highlighting that even in a limited space Manchester has so much going on. Pick from a range of exhibitions, theatre and live music, with highlights including exclusive guided tours of Cornerhouse’s fantastic Double Indemnity exhibition and a special late night opening at Manchester Museum for their Wonders of the Natural World student social.
