The Christmas lights are going on this week, which means one thing and one thing only: we’re gonna be skint. That’s right, present-buying season is officially upon us – so help ease the strain with these freebies this weekend.

Christmas Lights Switch on at Albert Square
‘Tis finally the time where we can start gearing up for Christmas without it feeling too premature, as signalled each year with the all-important Christmas lights switch on. As you’ll know, this is always a huge event, and 2014’s bash features comedian Jason Manford, actor Warwick Davies, boy band Collabro and stars from Shrek the Musical, all concluded with a round of fireworks. Entrance is free, but as the event always gets very busy it’s worth heading down early to ensure a spot. Read our full preview here.

Sleeping bag screening of The Fisher King (pictured)
The Homeless Film Festival is a touring film festival seeking to confront homeless issues by screening well-known films that have a connection to life on the streets – whether using it as a central theme or being the product of homeless creatives. To get tongues wagging here in Manchester they’re hosting a special ‘sleeping bag’ screening of Terry Gilliam’s classic film The Fisher King at St Ann’s Church, which stars Jeff Bridges and the late, great Robin Williams. It’s completely free to watch the film, you just have to book yourself a space here.
