Freeport: Terminal Mcr is a new art exhibition, debate series and showcase, hosted by the Abandon Normal Devices team exploring of art, technology and citizenship in the digital age. The name comes from the world’s free trade zones – known as ‘freeports’ and the showcase seeks to reflect on the intense political control of free movement, free trade and freedom of communications. Artists involved include Framing Territories, Geocinema, Networks of Trust, Kyriaki Goni, and CryptoRave and inspiration comes from new networked geographies, the darknet, and other liminal spaces. The location is perfect too: MediaCityUK, located on the shores of the Manchester Ship Canal has transformed from global trade gateway to creative media industry hub. What could be more fitting?
