Inspired by The Who’s trailblazing titular album and subsequent film, Quadrophenia rides its gleaming Lambretta onto the Lowry stage as a raw, evocative and stunningly original ballet celebrating the history, personal stories and inimitable aesthetic of mod culture.
Presented by Sadler’s Wells and Universal Music UK, the triumphant tribute to Britain’s legendary midcentury underground scene reimagines the 1979 cult classic feature film with a cast of talented dancers, as Jimmy’s story is brought to life in a whirlwind dance extravaganza that breathes new life into the reworked soul, refined psychedelia and social empowerment that defined a generation.
On Sun 20 Jul, Lowry’s annual musical extravaganza returns with a programme of timeless favourites from various hit productions to raise funds for Prevent Breast Cancer.
This October, BLACK POWER DESK powerfully reimagines and explores the struggle for liberation against the backdrop of a racially divided 1970s London, as the rhythm of sound system culture heralds a new musical epoch and unites communities amidst the covert namesake operations of New Scotland Yard.
Inspired by the heroic Mangrove Nine activitists and other influential figures from the fight for freedom, BLACK POWER DESK offers a poignant story of two loyal, defiant sisters, Celia and Dina, who are divided by grief and radical politics, and must find a way to reconnect for the sake of their community.
Performed to an original score played by a live three-piece band, this bold and piercingly insightful new production is a musical soundtrack that chronicles a defining, politically fraught period of unsung British history in a timely and resonant play for the modern age.
