Amongst our top picks of free things to do in Manchester this weekend is an exhibition of new work at Stretford Public Hall.
New Mills-based publishing house Red Ceilings comes to The International Anthony Burgess Foundation this Saturday afternoon for a series of poetry readings. They have put out more than a dozen chapbooks since their founding last year, and this event features many of the literary luminaries published in their pages including Ian Seed, Sally Barrett and James Roome, whose poem Bull is included in Red Ceiling’s latest volume.
Recently opened retro bar Sammy’s hosts this new club night on Saturday in their cosy Ancoats location. Amateur Hour showcases up-and-coming DJs alongside more established jockeys, with special guests Kenny & Sarah, DJ Taxi and Space Ritual’s Slacky performing alongside residents Judas Du and The Taxidermist. This event is free to attend, but they’ll be asking for donations to Saint Catherines Hospice on the night.

Starting on Friday and running throughout the weekend, Stretford Public Hall hosts this exhibition from Stretford Arts Collective, gathering the work of over 60 contributing artists from the area. Friday’s opening event features live DJs, refreshments and a chance to bid on some of the artworks on display. Proceeds from the auction will help fund community events at the hall – a fantastic neo-Gothic structure, and a vital hub for people in Stretford.
