Manchester is full of all kinds of eateries and places to try new and different flavours – and its bakeries are no exception. The city has a range of independent bake houses, each of which offer their own personalised takes on sweet treats. Here’s a handful of taste-bud ticklers that you simply must-try while visiting Manchester…

Perfectly baked Cruffins from Pollen Bakery

Pollen bakery is a sourdough and Viennoiserie bakery based in Ancoats, right in the heart of Manchester. In between serving up cups of locally sourced coffee, freshly baked loaves and delicious sandwiches, this hugely popular local bakery offers a unique twist on the beloved muffin. The ‘Cruffin’ is the lovechild of a croissant and a muffin, made out of crispy, flakey pastry and filled with a variety of flavours. Fillings change regularly – but we recommend dropping by when the caramel, chocolate, and peanut is on the menu.

Long Boi’s Bakehouse is a pastry-lovers dream nestled in the neighbourhood of Levenshulme, just outside of town. Their team have given every 90s kid’s favourite breakfast food – the Pop Tart – a Northern twist by injecting a few traditional flavours that we all know and love into this sweet pastry pocket. Available during lockdown and guaranteed to brighten your day – their rubharb and custard option is not one to miss.

Indulgent sticky-middle cookies from Gooey Co.

Gooey Co. made waves when it debuted its indulgent melty-middle cookies and sourdough doughnuts back in 2019. Cut to 2021, and not even a global pandemic can hinder their popularity – with their cookie and doughnut delivery service proving to be a huge hit during lockdown. While their doughnuts are certainly worth checking out, it’s their stodgy and sweet cookies – with an ever-changing array of flavours and fillings like Red Velvet, Kinder Bueno and cappuccino that are the stars of the show here.

Tuck into a Crube from Trove

Available in Levenshulme and Ancoats, Trove bakery specialises in creating freshly made sourdoughs, pastries and cakes alongside seasonal lunch and brunch dishes.  There’s plenty of sweet treats available at this Manchester-favourite, but it’s the arrival of their Crube that caught our attention. Similar to the Cruffin, this flakey pastry treat comes backed with sumptuous fillings – like thick speculoos creme pat.
