As much as the rise of the vinyl and the rebirth of the independents has been documented over the past few years, the music industry is still in a pretty bad way. Last Shop Standing was originally a book about the decline of the record shop – and with over 200 closing their doors having long since disappeared over the UK, there was a lot to cover – and was subsequently turned into a movie. Beatnik in Altrincham has bucked the trend for closures, opening up in time for Record Store Day earlier in the year – and now, they’re showing the movie, getting in Graham Jones – author of the book – for a question and answer session afterwards. The film features interviews from the likes of Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Norman Cook, Billy Bragg, Nerina Pallot, Richard Hawley and Clint Boon, looking back at the glory days and drawing conclusions on where the future may lay.
