This May sees the return of the 24th annual Manchester Jazz Festival, running from Thursday 23 to Monday 27 May across the city. The award-winning festival features innovative work in contemporary jazz from regional and international artists, performing in some of the city’s most revered venues. The festival are now seeking musicians for their opening event, Mancunity, a spectacular mass participation event created by award-winning composer and mjf favourite Andy Scott. Musicians of any age, standard or style are welcome to apply for the performance, and will only need an instrument that doesn’t require amplification, which they can play whilst walking. The ceremony will see crowds lead a musical procession towards St Ann’s Square, where an eclectic hand-chosen ensemble of musicians will then perform Mancunity to herald the official opening of mjf 2019. The project aims to celebrate all that is good about Manchester, along with its people, resilience, musical history and future facing attitude. Previously praised as “Europe’s most adventurous jazz festival”, mjf launched in 1996 with nine bands playing over the course of one day. The deadline to sign up for Mancunity is Sunday 19 May. Musicians can sign up here.
