Inspired by John Cage’s 4’ 33” – a ‘silent’ performance that is different every time – The Lowry’s Summer exhibition centres on the themes of change and spontaneity. Among the first names to be announced for ‘Expect the Unexpected’ are Yoko One and Gillian Wearing CBE. Including among Ono’s works is a video of ‘Cut Piece’ – one of her early performances in which she sat on a stage with a pair of scissors and invited audience members to cut off pieces of her clothes. This will be shown alongside Wearing’s ‘Signs that Say What You Want Them to Say…’. This set of photographs features people sharing what was on their mind when she approached them on a busy London street. Also presented will be films by the Dutch artist Merel Theloesen, a massive work by Turner-Prize winner Keith Tyson, and Joel Goodman’s viral photo of Mancunian revellers on New Year’s Eve. Further artists will be announced in the coming weeks.
