While the idea of running a marathon may be fun to play with, the actual physicality of it is something to sent a shiver down the spine of most of us mere mortals. So, if you’re after the kudos of raising some money for charity and having something athletic to brag to your workmates about completing without actually having to drag your sorry flesh over 26 and a bit miles, it could be worth getting your running shoes out for the Backwards Run. Spanning just a mile, this year’s event will be held in the scenic surrounds of Heaton Park. The 4th annual edition of the event, it will see the usual mix of real athletic types (people actually train for events by running backwards, and someone has managed to do the whole thing in a record 6 minute 58 seconds), fancy dressers, teams and… er… normal people, too. There are even non-competitive runs for those who can’t be bothered with stress of worrying whereabouts they finish.

Sun 11 Aug, Heaton Park, Manchester, M25 2SW, 9am – 1.30pm, £13 for individuals, £12 if part of a team, £15 for entries after 6 Jul, http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/
