Do you enjoy dining on great cuts of meat and drinking world-class wines in a sumptuous country setting? The Grill in the Park has just the thing. Just a short drive from Manchester city centre, in the leafy surrounds of Worsley Marriott Park Hotel, the 130-cover restaurant has undergone a complete refurb this year. It’s now decked out in a tasty combo of chocolate brown and Turkish Delight purple. Tables are booths, or comfortable rounds, and there’s an intimate ‘drop’ section behind the main room with views of the impressive lawns and trees outside. Not for nothing is the Worsley Marriott an acclaimed wedding venue and sports club.

There’s also a new menu by executive chef, Tom Gardner, to enjoy. Gardner has been at Worsley Park since 2014 and has created a twist on the classic grill menu, bringing in elegant fish dishes, flame-grilled steaks and a heavyweight, slow-cooked BBQ section. Starters take in sharing boards (flame roasted pepper hummus with homemade charred flatbreads), modern favourites (roast chorizo with garlic mayonnaise, grilled garlic prawns) and bistro classics.

We try perfectly tender pan-seared scallops with celeriac puree (pictured), roasted hazelnuts, apple and fennel (£14), a fresh baby beetroot, goat’s cheese and cress salad (£8) and ridiculously buttery bread, served with half a head of home-smoked garlic (£6.50). Whether you’re out for a special occasion or a chilled night with the family there’s a main to suit; choose from burgers (such as the Park Signature burger, £16, or buttermilk chicken, £14.50), salads (we liked the look of the classic caesar, £9, and superfood, £13), Park faves (think Seven Brother’s ale-battered fish and chips, sizzling veggie fajitas or rump of lamb) and all your favourite sides. Who doesn’t like onion rings and sweet potato fries?

Obviously two main draws here are the BBQ menu and grill; we have a full rack of rib with BBQ and piri piri sauce, homemade slaw and sweet potato fries (£16), and a perfect fillet steak (£30). For dessert tuck into lemoncello and raspberry semi freddo (£5.50), Bailey’s brulee with caramel mousse (£7) or a length of Lancashire and Cheshire cheese (£8). And then there’s the winelist. The trophy worthy selection includes lively white picpoul and rich, aromatic chardonnay;  the Argentinean Malbec (Atamisque Serbal, £36.95) is as rich as it sounds.

The new menu comes as the Worsley Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club reaches its 20th anniversary of opening. Over the last 20 years, the hotel has transformed into the flagship Marriott country Club in the UK – just another reason to visit this Autumn.
