Gardeners take over Cheshire’s beautiful Tatton Park this week for a five-day floral extravaganza. Tatton’s annual Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show is the northern sister event to London’s world famous Chelsea Flower Show. From flowerbeds designed by local schoolchildren to music-inspired displays taking different parts of the orchestra as their theme, a design competition and even a fruit and vegetable-growing contest, you will be surprised what you can do with plants and a bit of imagination. And, of course, expect to see gardens inspired by the Olympics. Growing experts will also be on hand to give advice and tips to take home and try out; a visit to the flower show aims to inspire you to get your gloves on, pick up a trowel and dig in. And gardening’s not all about unglamorous wellies – there’s the chance to be judged ‘best dressed’ at Thursday’s Ladies’ Day.

Wed 18 Jul – Sun 22 Jul, Tatton Park, Mereheath Lane, Knutsford, Cheshire, Wed-Sat 10am – 6.30pm, Sun 10am – 5pm, £23, www.rhs.org.uk/Shows-Events/RHS-Show-Tatton-Park/2012
