Coming up in the 1990s golden age of hip hop, Michigan producer Apollo Brown’s creations embody the soul tinged beats of that period fused with an early exposure to more diverse acts such as Journey and the Carpenters. Ugly Heroes is his project with Detroit’s Red Pill and Chicago’s Verbal Kent, both highly respected lyricists in their own right. The group’s debut, eponymously-named album is an ode to working life and keeping your head up in the city, stories woven intricately over Brown’s powerful, melodic and hard hitting instrumentals. Support on the night comes from US/UK crew Union Blak and Manchester staple, Hoya Hoya’s Jonny Dub.
