What do you reckon Richard Gere thinks about Stockport? Back in July 1978, Gere was brought to the town to film a few scenes for Yanks, a John Schlesinger movie about wartime Britain – and, more importantly, the Americans that came over here, turning the heads of the local women. To tenuously commemorate this momentous event in the history of the self-styled hat city, the Vintage Village Fair is celebrating the Home Front – acknowledging the hardships of the era but appreciating all the spirit and styles that came with it. As well as the vintage clothing and accessories, there will be a selection of era-appropriate vehicles driven in by the Military Vehicle Trust, perhaps manned by some of the Allied-uniformed re-enactors that have been invited along. Father and daughter duo Paul & Natasha Harper will be serendaing the crowds throughout the day with ditties to keep morale high, while Stockport Air Raid Shelters will be bringing their collection of handling artefacts, including the much-loathed tin hat. However, it seems that Richard Gere still hasn’t got back about his invite – we can only hope.
