In this latest edition of our Hong Kong series, we’re focusing the lens on stage production in all its forms. Where better to begin than the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, the biggest in the city, using its public funding to great effect to produce an impressive mix of the contemporary and classical. Looking forward to next year’s Hong Kong Arts Festival – their 44th, no less – early announcements point to another stellar cast of touring productions, including performances of Simon Baccanegra and Verdi’s Requiem by opera virtuosos Teatro Regio Torino, Staatsballett Berlin’s world-famous ballet The Sleeping Beauty, and the suitably theatrical and abstract biopic of Salvador Dali by Compagnia Finzi Pasca, La Verità. All this and much more will be crammed into February and March 2016 for your enjoyment. For a more traditional show drawing on ancient Cantonese culture, you’ll need to head to the North Point area and visit the opera. Sunbeam Theatre is among those taking steps to ensure this challenging yet rewarding art form continues to showcase its spectacular costumes and scenery into the 21st Century. The Hong Kong Players lay claim to being the oldest theatre company in the city – and they hold the added bonus for travellers of performing in the English language (other productions also offer English subtitles). Of their handful of annual shows, the most famous is Hong Kong’s annual panto. At the modern end of the spectrum, the acclaimed Fringe Club encourages new and innovative forms of expression by taking chances and offering its stage to regional groups covering mime and puppetry, as well as drama tackling the socio-political issues of the day. Or finally, those who enjoy thinking outside the box should sample Zuni Icosahedron’s multimedia work, which ranges from experimental visual art installations to audio-visual stage productions.
