Part Manchester Science Festival, part Greater Manchester Comedy Fringe, Helen Arney is keen to point out that Spoken Nerd, first and foremost, is “a comedy show all about the stuff that we find fantastic, mind-blowing and interesting. The stuff that we’re completely excited about and a lot of that stuff turns out to be maths and science.” So think Radio 4’s Infinite Monkey Cage and the live show Uncaged Monkeys – the kind of show that science geeks will find entertaining as well as more… artsy folk. Arney, herself a physics graduate as well as a musician and comedian, is joined by stand-up mathematician Matt Parker and ‘experiments guy’ Steve Mould. Together they will be performing some showy science stuff. “We set fire to things from across the stage with satellite dishes, we try to sing a google (which is 1 with 100 zeros after it), there’s a duet of ukulele and overhead projector, and we set fire to sound,” explains Arney.
