Free things to do this weekend, ft. football, WestFest and Guerrilla Eats

Like a clandestine lover the bank holiday weekend has been and gone, having its way with you before slinking off into the night without so much as a gentle kiss goodbye. But that doesn’t mean the fun is over – there’s still plenty to do this weekend too. Don’t worry, that extra day will come crawling back soon enough…

West Didsbury’s WestFest
WestFest is a weekend celebrating life in the charming ‘hood of West Didsbury – if you’re not a resident of this popular area simply use the time to saunter round pretending you are. With various local businesses joining in with special deals, sales, menus, BBQs and events, WestFest aims to praise and promote the buzzing independent local trade. There will be lots to see and do, but we’ve got our eyes on Thyme Out Deli, with its very own Great Didsbury Bake Off, a Big Breakfast Challenge and live music.

Guerrilla Eats (pictured)
The collective of street food merchants returns this weekend, this time back in Salford where it all began. Previous stints have proved very popular with visitors, and since its first event earlier this year the concept has grown and expanded. Ending its summertime residency at Chorlton pub The Beagle, Guerilla Eats takes to the street (well, railway arch) to serve the people of Salford with the best and most diverse range of food, with traders such as Arepa! Arepa! Arepa!, Chaat Chart, Fire & Salt BBQ and Ginger’s Comfort Emporium all set to be there. You’ll have to pay for the food itself, but entry to the event is free.

Trof Trophy football tournament
This Sunday various folk of the Manchester music scene are coming together to compete in a 5-a-side football tournament, using the beautiful game to raise money for local charity Lifeline. With competitors taken from Dutch Uncles (who are talking a big talk), Band on the Wall, Ear to the Ground, Soup Kitchen, Common and more, show your support at Powerleague Ardwick, before nipping down to the Deaf Institute for the free after party, where there will be a quiz hosted by Dutch Uncles and teams taking to the decks.

Rochdale Feel Good Festival
Head over to Rochdale this weekend for the festival that seeks to make you feel damn good. The generous lineup of music includes Neville Staple (The Specials), BBC 6Music favourites The Crookes and Red Alert, and alongside this there will be tasty food to fill the bellies. Sunday Brunch’s Simon Rimmer will also be there to add a bit of celebrity pizzazz.
