The Portico hosts a unique evening of Finnish and Japanese-inspired music and spoken word this June.
Zuihitsu of Sound – A New Way to Listen combines the free-flowing nature of a Japanese Zuihitsu (a genre of Japanese literature consisting of loosely connected personal essays and fragmented ideas) with music inspired by the snow-clad forests of Finland.
Featuring principal players from the BBC Philharmonic — flautist Alex Jakeman and cellist Maria Zachariadou — and musical spoken word by Australian writer/musician Rachel Weld, the performance encourages listeners to discover their own layers and connections between the sounds as they reverberate beneath The Portico’s historic dome.
Rachel, who is also a member of the BBC Philharmonic viola section, explored the zuihitsu form during a creative residency in Finland. From this, she devised and performed the script for Zuihitsu of Sound: A New Way to Listen with Maria and Alex during the Chamber.nq concert series.
