Now here’s a gig that many people have been waiting a long time for: R&B star D’Angelo is coming the Apollo in February. D’Angelo first made his name in the early 1990s as a major player in the burgeoning neo-soul movement. However, after his second album, 2000’s highly acclaimed Voodoo, he became disillusioned with fame and virtually disappeared from the music industry, except for a few guest appearances and a handful of concerts. A new album was often touted, but the release date was pushed back so often that it became the Chinese Democracy of the urban music world. When it was finally released late last year, entitled Black Messiah, it was given a rapturous reception. This gig is likely to sell out fast, so book early before you miss your chance. After this tour, there’s a decent chance D’Angelo will disappear into the ether once more.
