Spanish cinema’s most notable auteur, Pedro Almodóvar, needs little introduction, and Home are screening five choices from his body of work this September as part of a devoted Almodóvar season. Kicking off the season is a hour-long special hosted by Carmen Herrero, Head of Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University, in which Almodóvar’s filmmaking is centrally explored through clips and insights (Sat 3 Sep). Following directly on from this appetiser is Dark Habits (Sat 3 Sep), a romance fuelled surrealist comedy drama that showcases the director’s love of screwball comedy. What Have I Done To Deserve This? (Mon 5 Sep) is another highlight in which the conventional family unit turns anarchic. Matador (Tue 13 Sep, pictured), meanwhile, stars a young Antonio Banderas with anti-social behavioural issues and includes impressive cinematography by Ángel Luis Fernández. Law of Desire (Sat 17 Sep) and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (19 Sep) close out this must-see Spanish odyssey.
