Music for Change at Chapter One Books
If you head on over to Lever Street’s Chapter One bookstore this Monday afternoon, you can catch this fascinating discussion between Beyond the Borders activist Grace Harrison and Iranian-Liverpudlian rapper Farhood. It’s part of Manchester’s Journeys festival, which celebrates the work of refugee and asylum seeker artists, and the pair will be discussing art’s power to instigate change and the ways it can be used to rehabilitate the image of refugees in the public eye. Farhood will also be performing at the Journeys Weekender: A free festival in Cathedral Gardens running on the 14th – 15th October.
Mon 9 Oct, Chapter One Books, Chatsworth House, 19 Lever Street, Manchester, M1 1BY. 3pm – 4.30pm, www.eventbrite.co.uk
First Week of Design Manchester
Design Manchester 2017 is already upon us, and we’ve put together a run down of the best things you can see at this year’s festival. However, if you’re looking to save a few pennies, there’s also plenty of free things in the festival programme for you this week: On Monday, Portrait Youth (pictured) – a photography exhibition documenting the styles and exploring the identity of young multi-ethnic Britons – opens at Central Library. On Wednesday, there’s the launch of another exhibition entitled ‘Burgess Re-Covered’ at the Anthony Burgess Foundation, which contains artists’ reimagining some of the author’s classic works. Lastly, from Wednesday onwards new exhibition ‘Fizzing at the Terminals’ will be on display at PLANT NOMA, offering a chance to look at the work of legendary designer Malcolm Garrett and the iconic album covers he produced for Buzzcocks during their early career.

To get through the doors for free, you need to tag yourself on the Facebook event and make sure you arrive between 11pm and 11.30pm. You’re limited to only tagging one person at a time, so if your mates want in too, they’ll have to tag themselves.

Beer Can Art Exhibition at Electrik
You may have seen the work of Beatnikz Republic Brewing Company dotted around the city bars, as they put as much effort into the outward appearance of their stubby cans as they do the liquid inside. Chorlton’s Electrik bar is one such bar where you can purchase their wares, and until Thursday 19 October, you’ll be able to see their designs hung on the walls as well. 16 beer can designs adorn the walls of the Wilbraham Road bar, for you to enjoy whilst supping a can of the real thing.
Until Thu 19 Oct, Electrik, 559 Wilbraham Road, Manchester, M21 0AE. 12pm – 12.30am, www.facebook.com
