Blissed at The Old Monkey
Our first pick of free things to do in Manchester this week is this gig at the Old Monkey on Portland Street, organised by Manchester/Newcastle promoters Cable Concerts. Rock four-piece Blissed are headlining the night, bringing their garage-rock sensibilities and vocals deeply reminiscent of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. Look out for their single Stop and See, which they put out last year and will doubtless be performing as part of their set. Supporting them on the night are accomplished indie rockers Ballamona and a set from poppy solo artist Chris Kelly.

Disabled Living Exhibition Launch at Redbank House
The charity Disabled Living just celebrated its 100th birthday, and to commemorate the occasion they’re hosting an exhibition of photos and other archive materials at their Redbank House location. The launch is this Tuesday, and you can find out more by reading our full preview.

Hundred Years of Youth Symposium at MMU Business School
This event taking place at the Business School at Manchester Metropolitan University on Thursday takes a look at the changing face of youth culture, charting the rise of youth consciousness following World War one, right through to the present day. Dr. David Wilkinson, Dr. Sian Lincoln and Professor Keith Gildart, who’ve all written on the subject of youth, will be in discussion with Professor Melanie Tebbutt of the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies. They’ll be talking through their own work – which will be available for purchase after the panel – and looking at the history of young people in the UK and beyond. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A and refreshments.

Dirtbag Screening at Patagonia (pictured)
Outdoors-wear store Patagonia hosts a screening of the 2017 documentary Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey, at their King Street shop this Thursday evening. The documentary follows Beckey, a man who eschewed ordinary life to become a legendary climber, mountaineer and explorer. An eccentric, a pioneer, a man who was loathed and admired in equal measure: The documentary looks at all these perspectives, whilst also being a love letter to the art of climbing, which Beckey devoted most of his 94 years to. The Patagonia chain was also involved in the documentary’s production, so expect a good presentation of it here.
