Jamali Maddix had already been making a name for himself with his uncompromising comedy after winning the Chortle Student Comedy Award in 2014 (previous winners include Joe Lycett, Lloyd Langford and Adam Hess) before he took on Vice’s Hate Thy Neighbour. The show, in which Maddix spoke to a number of far right extremists and hate groups was a viral sensation and the comedian’s surprisingly calm demeanour in the face of such vitriol was only matched by the thoughtful stand up he was able to turn these encounters into. His latest show ‘Vape Lord’ touches on some of the issues raised in the Vice TV program and looks at the rise of the alt-right. Timely, necessary and, most importantly, very funny Maddix is not just one to watch out for in the future. His time is now.
