With the ongoing renaissance of vinyl and tape cassettes showing no signs of slowing down, audiophiles will be thrilled at the news that Affleck’s Palace have welcomed new dedicated tape shop, Mars Tapes. Stocking an eclectic collection of old classics along with the latest releases from independent labels from across the globe, the store is the brainchild of young entrepreneurs Borja Regueira and Moira Lorenzo. Speaking on the opening, co-owner Borja said: “I think cassette is perfect if you want to support bands. It’s cheap: you can buy a tape at a gig and put it in your pocket without any hassle. It also has an analogue sound – the sound is quite dirty – in a good way.” The store also stocks a varied selection of analogue gear, from boomboxes to Walkmans, and offers services such as cassette player cleaning. Borja is also co-founder of local record label Sour Grapes, host of weekly Squeeze events at Oxford Road favourite Big Hands, priding themselves on their fair treatment of performers, all of who are paid well for their efforts. Mars Tapes can be found on Affleck’s third floor.
