The past week has been a huge relief – it feels we’ve turned multiple corners at once. With a goal for heading out of lockdown and a change in weather, as we head into March there are definite grounds for optimism. For the moment though, we’re staying indoors, but fear not – we’ve put together a selection of some great free events taking place online this week to keep you entertained. Included are a recital from the Royal Northern College of Music, a spring-themed talk from Manchester Art Gallery and much more…

In Conversation with The White Pube | Tue 2 Mar | 4pm - 5pm

Don’t be put off by the name! The White Pube is the collaborative identity of Zarina Muhammad and Gabrielle de la Puente, who founded their arts criticism site in 2015. Their reviews, essays and campaigns around art, food and the creative industries have gained an international readership – they also campaign to diversify criticism, and open up the artworld to a wider audience. Expect an open-minded and insightful chat – if you fancy getting a flavour, check them out on Instagram.

Lecture with former Archbishop of Canterbury | Manchester University | Thu 4 Mar | 4pm

Dr Rowan Williams is one of the country’s most famous thinkers. The former Archbishop of Canterbury explores the fascinating story of Maria Skobtsova, a benevolent Christian figure in Paris during the interwar years. As well as this lecture, Dr Williams also discusses his new book Candles in the Dark: Faith, Hope and Love in a Time of Pandemic – topics I think we can all relate to at the moment!

Thursday Lates recital | RNCM | Thu 4 Feb | 8pm

Students from the Royal Norther College of Music have been keeping busy with online classes, events and masterclasses throughout the lockdown period. As well as presenting online ensemble videos, students had the chance to perform in a socially-distanced concert hall back in November – here’s another chance to hear the music of Carl Nielsen in between two pieces with a Latin flavour, from Paquito D’Rivera and tango king Astor Piazzolla.

Manchester Art Gallery Unlocked Online Talk | Sat 6 Mar | 4pm - 5pm

One of the joys of lockdown has been Grayson Perry’s Art Club, which is back for a second series on Channel 4. Manchester Art Gallery replicated this with #MAGClub, the results of which appear on Instagram. Soon, you’ll be able to see their exhibition in person. Here though, the Gallery returns with another interesting online talk, this time on ‘life, renewal and the rhythm of seasons’, focusing on the life-giving powers of Spring and how that’s channelled in pieces from the Gallery’s collection.
