A brand new dive bar is opening in Stockport, taking heavy inspiration from Tennessee party culture.
Located on Vernon Street, Notion is Stockport’s latest answer to a post-work jolly, offering a brilliant combination of grungy-yet-stylish décor, over 80 kinds of rum and whiskey and potentially ‘perfect’ buttermilk-brined chicken wings – which are just 50p each!
Notion also has a pretty impressive cocktail menu, with signature drinks including their own take on the classic Zombie (gold rum, overproof rum, white rum, Jägermeister, orange juice, pineapple juice, apple juice and lime), and the fantastically named ‘Maggie Thatcher’ – which mixes Johnnie Walker Black whiskey, Jägermeister coldbrew, chocolate bitters and coffee. Very fitting.
However, the star of the show is the venue’s extensive range of speciality whiskey and rum, with some spirits on the bar that can’t be found anywhere else in Greater Manchester. These include Angel’s Envy – an extremely rare Kentucky bourbon, and the ideal bevvy for American whiskey lovers – and Nusa Cana – a premium Indonesian rum with undertones of nutmeg, ginger, coffee, cacao and pineapple; a delicate flavour but a warming drink overall, Nusa Cana is perfect for a cold and wet Tuesday evening.
The new bar comes from local hospitality legend, Andy James, who has worked at some of the best joints in Manchester – including Bunny Jacksons, Cain & Grain, and Edinburgh Castle in Ancoats. Andy also founded Ate Days a Week – the musical-themed restaurant that started as a lockdown venture and is now serving up classic British dishes and sarnies, each with an original Andy James take.
So, naturally, the food at Notion is pretty mega too. The highlight of the menu is of course their 50p wings, each one buttermilk-brined for over 24 hours. On top of that, the menu also boasts some pretty sexy burgers, made with hand-pressed Cheshire beef patties and meaty loaded skin-on fries, much to a veggie’s despair.
Andy hopes that Notion will be somewhere people can completely let loose, especially after the dreadful year we’ve all had. Slotting perfectly into the upcoming independent food and drink scene of Stockport, Notion has some exciting collabs coming up, including Neil Garner’s new cocktail space, Cherry Jam. Watch this space, folks.
