Bilal’s latest venture into the avant garde side of soul, A Love Surreal, has captured the attention of fans and critics with its band-led grooves and poetic, experimental vocals. The US singer-songwriter, noted for his unique style, wide vocal range – particularly his falsetto – and star collaborations with the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonce and P Diddy, has enjoyed success on both mainstream (via Interscope Records) and independent labels. The latter proved to be a better fit for Bilal after his second release on Interscope, Love For Sale, was deemed unmarketable and was leaked in its entirety online in 2006. Moving into the present and a further admirable body of work later, including work with Solange, Robert Glasper and The Roots, A Love Surreal is a live show waiting to happen.
