The name ‘L’Enclume’ is legendary among food fans. The original Cartmel home of award-laden chef, Simon Rogan, stands for everything that’s great about modern British cooking – and it’s just been announced that L’Enclume has secured a third Michelin star making this the only restaurant with three stars in the UK outside of the south of England (read more here).
Think locally sourced, having your own farm, using foraged ingredients, sourcing fine British wines, making dishes to reflect the seasons, serving food in a unfussy yet elegant setting, with natural materials and bespoke, locally fired tableware. Ring any bells? Rogan was there first.
Rogan’s legacy is growing by the year and his restaurant group, Umbel, now includes eight venues including Rogan and Co and Henrock in the Lakes, Aulis in London and a clutch of openings in Hong Kong.
To celebrate 20 years since Rogan opened his first restaurant, he’s hosting 20 one-off and seasonal events throughout the year. The season kicked off with a special ‘Best of Rogan’ retrospective menu served at his newest opening, Henrock, at the Linthwaite Hotel in Windermere earlier this year.
Highlights included a pineapple creme brulee with sour cherry reduction (an exact replica of the same dish served on opening night at L’Enclume in 2002) alongside miso-glazed aubergine, game pie, and 24hr super slow cooked beef short rib.
Dish of the night was Rogan’s perfect apple pie; concentric rings of home-grown apple creating the ultimate take on a British classic. Wines flights at Henrock start at £35 for a natural-inspired journey, while more classics (think world class French red Pauillac from winemaker JM Cazes and elegant white Rioja, Capellania) are offered on the £65 version. Both options are fabulous and many of the above dishes are available on the Henrock menu throughout 2022.
A range of other events are planned throughout the year; keep an eye on SimonRogan.co.uk for updates.
