Jewish music in all its diversity is given a beautiful showcase this March as Manchester Jewish Museum opens up its latest series of Synagogue Nights shows.
Throughout March, the recently restored 1874 Grade II listed Spanish and Portuguese synagogue will host a series of intimate shows that explore the sound of generations of brilliant Jewish composers—from the virtuosic music of Klezmer to the modern pop tunes of Amy Winehouse.
Up next in the season, is Pianist Jeremy Sassoon with MOJO: Musicians of Jewish Origin—a celebration of modern Jewish melodists, from Burt Bacharach to Amy Winehouse (Sun 20 Mar, 7pm / £18).
Rounding off the programme on Thu 24 Mar is Vessels of Song: Journeys into the Worlds of Klezmer, a musical tradition created by the Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews and reinterpreted here by the Manchester Klezmer Ensemble who will chart the fascinating journey this music took across borders and cultures, and to mark the enduring heritage of Klezmer.
