From rousing Ravel and Rachmaninov’s virtuosic Third Piano Concerto to a Strauss showpiece and ABBA party, the Hallé Orchestra is set to deliver a diverse array of stunning performances as its autumn season begins in earnest.
From Wed 21 Sep to Sun 25 Sep, Hallé Assistant Conductor Delyana Lazarova presides over three wondrous compositions in three shows. Beginning with Ravel’s La Valse, Lazarova introduces compatriot Dobrinka Tavakova, who illuminates the hall with her Concerto for Cello and Strings, described as a ‘journey through turbulence and longing before ending in pure radiance,’ before Guy Johnston performs the evening’s showpiece – Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, widely considered to be his greatest symphonic achievement.
On Sat 1 Oct, Hallé Pops maestro Stephen Bell joins the orchestra and a slate of talented guest vocalists for an all-killer-no-filler ABBA show. Playing the inimitable group’s hits as full arrangements for one night only, the occasion is set to be a joyous highlight of the Hallé’s season.
On Thu 6 Oct, Hallé Music Director Sir Mark Elder conducts a spellbinding performance featuring Smetana’s delightful sonic depiction of the river Vltava, before the ‘fiendish virtuosity’ and late-Romantic lyricism of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, culminating in Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), the Hallé party-piece which brims with crowd-pleasing solos and orchestral flourishes.
