On Sat 27 Apr, the BBC Philharmonic transforms The Bridgewater Hall stage into the rugged, ethereal vistas of Scandinavia with Nordic Noir, an enchanting celebration of Northern Europe’s winter wonderland featuring compositions from its greatest musical luminaries.
The programme showcases Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony, a heartening ‘cathedral of sound’ brimming with atmosphere – ‘Stimmung’ – and intricate yet grand soundscapes as elegant and cavernous as the most majestic place of worship.
The second work of the concert, Sibelius’s mystical tone poem En Saga, evokes the inexpressible beauty of Finland’s ghostly tundra with a dose of Nordic impressionism, inspired by its rich mythology.
Lotta Wennäkoski adds her own measured patina atop Sibelius’s work with Verdigris, imbuing her own compositions with his orchestral depictions of stark mountains and sweeping vistas.
