They say Christmas comes earlier every year, and that certainly seems to be the case in Manchester, as the festive season is kicking off even before we’ve had Bonfire Night. That’s right, the city’s big Xmas lights switch-on is this Saturday. It’s in the usual location of Albert Square, where there will be a big stage presenting a free evening of entertainment. The headliners are superstar DJ Sigala and pop starlet Pixie Lott. There will also be some unadulterated cheese in the shape of performances by the casts of Elf: the Musical and Shrek. Bringing some culture, the cast of the Little Women – which is currently playing at the Hope Mill in Ancoats – will be performing some renditions of Christmas classics. The grand finale is a 10-minute-long fireworks display. The event is family-friendly and alcohol free. Visitors are advised to wrap up warm and arrive early, before the square fills up.
